Overpopulation at Vimy Ridge Public School
What is this series about?
This documentary series is about the overpopulation of Vimy Ridge Public School in Findlay Creek. This Findlay Creek community has grown so rapidly that problems arise. I want to talk about one of those problems, overpopulation.
Why did I choose this topic?
For the past 5 years, there has been a constant debate about this issue within our community. I am also interested, as a mother sending my first child to this school. When my first child entered JK, the number of students in a class was 24. And even at that time, it was a large number. But this year, more than 30 students are in the class. Vimy Ridge Public School is said to have the largest number of students in Ontario. Although there is only one school, the number of students increases yearly. So there is no choice but to build a temporary building on the playground. When temporary facilities are located on the green, children have less space to run around, and it becomes cumbersome for children to go back and forth between the main building, including the bathroom. Not only the temporary building but also the staff shortage is a problem. The number of students is large, but there are not enough teachers and staff to take care of them, so safety is also a problem. A few days ago, a tragic accident happened. That is why the flag is flown at half-mast in the first picture. Half of the 7th and 8th graders went to another school last year. And a new Catholic board school will be founded 2 years later. Also, new students are restricted from going to another nearby school unless their siblings attend Vimy Ridge Public school. It may be challenging to solve this problem all at once, but I hope to solve it in the future.
What did I learn through this assignment?
It gave me an opportunity to learn more about the problem I had only known superficially. And when writing the reason for choosing this topic in the second paragraph, I could be aware of why the documentary photo is needed.
